Submissions Invited for Professor Surya Subedi Global Essay Prize

The Wilberforce Institute is pleased to invite submissions to the annual Professor Surya Subedi Global Essay Prize, dedicated to promoting awareness and scholarship on modern slavery abolition and the protection of human dignity. The award is named after University of Hull alumnus Professor Surya Subedi, who graduated in 1988 with a degree in Law.

This prestigious award invites submissions by graduates of original essays in English, before 31 December 2023. Through the generous support of Professor Surya Subedi, a distinguished figure in international law and human rights, we are able to offer an award of £500 to the most exceptional contribution in terms of originality, organisation, style, and presentation in the fields of law and social sciences/humanities, worldwide. The prize winner will be revealed in March 2024. The competition provides a significant platform for those dedicated to advancing the global understanding of these critical issues.

Professor Subedi said: “I am immensely honoured by the establishment of this prize in my name at the University of Hull, my alma mater.”

The inaugural Subedi Prize, awarded to Yogi Bratajaya of the University of Oxford, exemplifies the prize’s commitment to recognising thought-leadership in the realm of modern slavery and human dignity. Bratajaya’s essay, which addressed the #justtransition and its implications for human rights and indigenous peoples, serves as a shining example of the kind of insightful analysis and research that this prize seeks to support. The Subedi Prize represents an opportunity to engage with these pressing global concerns and to be part of the solution in the ongoing fight against modern slavery.
