We are excited to bring back our Alumni Masterclass series, giving you, our Hull grads, an exciting glimpse into the work, research or teaching of a University of Hull academic. In this session, we’ll be taking a look at Generative AI with Dr Kevin Pimbblet, Director of our Centre of Excellence for Data Science, AI and Modelling (DAIM).

The world has been awash with generative AI since transformer and diffusion models produced the likes of ChatGPT and MidJourney. Everyone is now able to produce text and images of their own desire thanks to these technologies with minimal expertise, including for example the creation of CVs. However, there are inherent dangers ranging from voter manipulation through to ethical minefields in the use of these technologies. In this masterclass, we will introduce both text and image generative AIs, including some thoughts and tip how to prompt them and optimize the results, how to apply them to some select situations, and how to consider the ethical issues that they raise.

Masterclass Session Leader Bio:

Kevin is the Director of the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Modelling (DAIM) at the University of Hull that employs over 50 academics, teaching assistants, and professional staff. Originally trained in the physical sciences, he has held positions at Durham (UK), Queensland (Australia), Monash (Australia), a sabbatical at Oxford (UK), and Hull (UK). His research work covers a wide range of physics and astrophysics, image analysis and spectroscopy, machine learning and its applications, education and interdisciplinary approaches that provide novel solutions to problems. He has international awards for outstanding contributions to student learning, and is widely recognised for internationally leading work in galaxy evolution and cosmology having been a leading member of internationally significant experiments such as WiggleZ that confirmed the reality of dark energy in the Universe.
