In this episode of the Inspired in Hull Podcast we meet Emma Butcher, a Military Historian at the historic Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). The oldest military think tank in the world, it was established in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington to study naval and military science. Emma’s particular interest, and the topic of her forthcoming book, is the experience of children in times of modern war. This interest originated during her time at the University of Hull when her speciality was the little known childhood writings of the Brontës.
In this episode we discuss, the work of the Brontës, how modern warfare affects the children involved, how children are incorporated into military activity, and Emma’s experiences at Hull and in her career.
