1000 negatives: gallery of forgotten images from the archives

In January we’ll be celebrating the 1st anniversary of the Centenary Archives Photography Project. The initiative brings alumni volunteers to the Hull History Centre to dig for hidden treasures amongst the archives where they’re bringing to light long lost images from the last 100 years of the University of Hull.

There’s much to celebrate as we reach the 1 year milestone: over 1,000 negatives have now been digitized, and another scanner has been purchased to allow more volunteers to get involved and help us to ‘reframe our past’ ahead of the University of Hull’s Centenary in 2027. With so much still to uncover in the archives, this is an essential and exciting step.

These archives record the activities of student societies, significant moments in the University’s history, key research undertaken by Departments, awards received, graduation ceremonies & notable individuals associated with the University. The project will help to increase the number of accessible collections available to future researchers at Hull History Centre beyond the life of the Centenary.

But the images also bring to life remarkable moments that might otherwise have been lost to history, and we’re delighted to share with you a snapshot of what’s been retrieved. You can see the images below.
