Sport at Hull Roundup: Sam Franklin tells us about a busy year for the Athletics Union

Hi everyone, welcome to your Sport at Hull Roundup! In this space we will give updates on all things sport, competitions and University Athletes! From American Football to Pole & Aerial Fitness, Basketball to Snowboarding, and many more, have a read and find out what our Teams are up to!

For those who don’t know, my name is Sam Franklin. Formerly a student and President of Tennis at the University, I have now entered a full-time role as the Sports Coordinator at Hull University Student’s Union, supervising the 47 Sports Clubs that take part at the University!

Currently sport at Hull University is thriving. With over 1600 athletes across our Athletic Union, we are seeing some fantastic results out of our BUCS and local leagues. Currently our Men’s Football 1st Team stand at the top of the league, alongside the Tennis Women’s Team!

We’ve also had some fantastic events. Fight Night came about in November, in which 30 students from a wide range of sport clubs spent eight weeks training with coaches to fight in a professional fundraiser, supporting Men’s mental health. This was one of over 30 fundraisers for Movember, in which they raised over £16,000.

And that was only half of the academic year! Right now, students from Athletics, Badminton and Swimming have just returned from Sheffield, having taken part in the BUCS National Championships. And for the first time, Ski and Snowboarding are entering the downhill ski races in Manchester! Some fantastic results coming out of BUCS; however, the real competition is coming up very soon… Varsity! On the 21st March, Hull will be going head-to-head in an all-out competition against the University of Lincoln, with over 20 sporting events throughout the day! It will surely be a day to remember, as our students have been working hard to reclaim our trophy!

And that is not all… On the 4th of March, the current Vice-president of Men’s Rugby Union, Lewis, will be hosting our annual charity auction, raising money for the Oddball’s Foundation!

Player Spotlight: Dom Reading, Boxing

Our first Player Spotlight is Dom, the current President of Boxing. For the past year Boxing has seen a fantastic shift, focusing on inclusion, improvement and safe spaces for all abilities, as well as women’s only sessions. This has pioneered by Dom, creating one of the most inclusive and welcoming Sports Groups on Campus. With nearly 60 members, Dom supervises and hosts various different training sessions, and single-handedly created a new partnership with City of Hull Boxing Club, providing his athletes with professional training and support. He was also a key player in organising Fight Night, allowing students to take part in competing for Movember, and providing high quality training sessions. His next big goal? Lincoln! Just after Varsity Boxing will be heading across the Humber to compete against their university! We wish them all the best of luck!

An anonymous Student’s Quote for Dom, nominating him for an award:“He has been so inclusive and helpful both as a president and helping out coaching. He takes time to know most people in the club by name and make people feel welcome. He also works brilliantly as a team leader within the committee, taking on and coordinating plans and delegations. He’s also just a lovely guy, so friendly to everyone.”
