We are delighted to offer special discounted tickets to our alumni for the forthcoming production of ‘The Culture – A Farce in Two Acts’. This eagerly awaited stage play is the latest work of Hull alumnus James Graham (Drama, 2003) who, with a string of sell-out shows in the West End including ‘Ink’, ‘Labour of Love’, ‘This House’ and ‘The Vote’, has emerged as one of the leading lights of contemporary British theatre. Graham’s new play brings together satirical observations from his exclusive behind the scenes access to the running of the year-long festival.

“James Graham, as we know from ‘Ink’ and ‘This House’, has a rare capacity to recreate pivotal moments from our past.” Michael Billington, The Guardian review of ‘This House’
“Graham reminds us that you don’t need House of Cards-style intrigue to create a gripping storyline.’ Dominic Cavendish, The Independent review of ‘This House’
“This is a very clever play by the political anorak and wunderkind James Graham.” Ann Treneman, The Times review of ‘Labour of Love’
‘The Culture – A Farce in Two Acts’
Thursday 1st February, 7pm, £14pp
The Culture is a satirical farce in two acts, examining the ‘culture’ of culture, and the inner workings of the Hull 2017 project.
January 2018, and a busy day at the offices of Hull 2017. Today is the ceremonial handover to ambassadors from the next UK City of Culture. Meanwhile, the monitoring and evaluation team have to present The Audit – a measurement of the impact ‘the culture’ has had on the city. Can their logic models, outcome evaluations and statistical analyses really measure its impact on the people of Hull? The visiting Minister from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport certainly expects so.
What could go wrong…?
Only, perhaps, Dennis, an average citizen who arrives into the offices of Hull 2017 on Lowgate to register a complaint but accidentally finds himself at the centre of events that could bring the whole thing to its knees.
James Graham’s other work includes ‘Ink’ and ‘Labour of Love’ which ran concurrently in the West End in 2017; ‘This House’ nominated for the Olivier Best play award; and ‘The Vote’, nominated for a BAFTA).
Book now and don’t miss what promises to be an exceptional end to Hull’s year in the spotlight.
