Join us for the latest in our alumni receptions at Hull Truck Theatre. We’re offering alumni discounted tickets for Abigail’s Party, the play based on Mike Leigh’s thorny comedy masterpiece. Join us before the show for a complimentary glass of wine, or fruit juice.
In 2000, in a list of the Greatest British Television Programmes, Abigail’s Party was placed 11th. It was described by Mike Leigh as a ‘tragi-comedy’ that reflects the real-life behaviour of aspiring couples in 1970s suburbia. Join us for an evening of comedy and entertainment that will cut close to the bone, make you laugh, feel uncomfortable, but also make you sympathise with these flawed, awkward characters from a key moment in British history.
Welcome to suburban Britain in 1977. Beverly and Laurence have invited their neighbours Angela and Tony, and Sue, round to their house for a party.
Except it’s not really a party, it’s drinks, nibbles and snobby comments as Beverly tries to be a model of middle class behaviour and taste. Whilst the cheese and pineapple sticks are circulated and awkward pauses are filled with sneaky cigarettes, the real party is happening back at Sue’s house, where her teenage daughter Abigail and her mates are having the time of their lives.
As the teenagers’ punky reggae party filters in from outside, the cracks begin to show back at Beverly’s. For all their fancy things, she and Laurence can barely hide their dislike of each other, and hard-working, upwardly mobile Angela and Tony are struggling with the mortgage.
Mike Leigh’s comedy masterpiece has been a hit on stage and television. Directed by Amanda Huxtable this production looks at what can happen when we forget to be true to ourselves.
Abigail’s Party is part of the Arts Council England Change Makers Programme and Champions Cultural leaders currently underrepresented in our industry.
