On International Women’s Day 2019 we are delighted to welcome back onto campus the Governor at HMP Humber Marcella Goligher for an Inspired in Hull lecture that perfectly illustrates the leadership qualities required in the most challenging circumstances.
In society’s invisible corners, dealing with the people, communities and institutions overlooked, forgotten and pushed to the margins, Marcella has brought compassion, emotional intelligence and a values lead approach to leadership. Whether managing challenging behaviour from violent prisoners, delivering services to protect and help vulnerable young people, or navigating relationships with powerful external agencies Marcella has improved services, changed lives, and made a powerful impact in places where others may fear to tread.
Join us at the University of Hull for a powerful and engaging talk from one of the exceptional women leaders in our community. The BA Social Work and Social Policy, 1988, graduate has worked as a Social Worker in Child Protection and a Probation Officer.
In 2007 Marcella joined the Prison Service and since then has worked as Deputy Governor and within the women’s estate, and Governing Governor of HM Young Offenders Institute Wetherby where she implemented a plan to increase capacity and services to take in the population from HM YOI Hindley following its closure as a YOI for the Young Peoples Estate. Marcella also implemented the Transforming Youth Custody plan. In 2016 she took up post of Governing Governor at HMP Humber and has led it to a much improved prison delivering a safe, decent and secure environment with sustained improvement in stability and a good regime and services for men with a focus on rehabilitation and support for transitioning to the community.
Having experienced the most challenging jobs in the least forgiving environments, her work with staff, offenders and young people means that Marcella is perfectly placed to discuss the limits and responsibilities of leadership.
