Hello Again!
Welcome back to our newest edition of Sports Roundup! Our athletes have had a very busy time the last few months. With the BUCS season coming to an end, our students took part in the busiest head-to-head event of the year… Varsity! On the 21st March we were happy to welcome The University of Lincoln and their Sports Teams to our Campus, as we watched over 1200 athletes compete in 20 different sports throughout the day!
Lincoln did unfortunately gain the win in the end; however, we brought back several wins that sent them shaking! Our Wins were as follows:
Netball Squad 1s: 57-20 WIN
Netball Squad 2s: 41-34 WIN
Men’s Volleyball 1s: 3-0 WIN
Men’s Basketball 1s: 111-70 WIN
Women’s Basketball 1s: 65-39 WIN
Men’s Cricket 1s: 72-71 WIN
Men’s Football 1s: 2-1 WIN
Women’s Football 1s: 2-1 WIN
Ultimate Frisbee 1s: 3-0 WIN
Badminton Men’s 1s: 8-0 WIN
Badminton Men’s 2s: 7-1 WIN
Climbing Men’s 1s: 594-570 WIN
Swimming 1s: 11-10 WIN
Tennis Women’s 1s: 5-1 WIN
Some fantastic scores in, well done to every player that took part! Don’t worry, we’ll be back for Lincoln next year…
The atmosphere on campus was fantastic, one of my favourite moments was watching a super intense Squash point, with S. Barnes from Hull taking the win! However, my highlight of the day was the results. As I announced the winners sport-by-sport, there was no greater feeling than hearing Hull cheer as they drove to an unbelievably close victory against Lincoln. You guys all worked so hard and it is only fair we recognise you for it!
Player Spotlight: Elizabeth Safonkina – Tennis
Our next Player Spotlight goes off campus to Tennis, specifically to their Women’s Captain, Liz. Throughout the BUCS season and at Varsity, Liz has shown dedication and commitment to her club and has brought back 90% of her matches as wins.
Liz’s commitment to her club, through training sessions, attendance and competition has solidified her position within the Athletic Union and set a fantastic precedent for how Sport should be presented from our university. After winning her matches at Varsity, she can only go in one direction… President! In the next academic year Liz will be taking over the reins and making the club the best it can be! We wish her the best of luck as she continues along this amazing path.
